FCS Course Descriptions

 

Health Skills 7

Students will spend 9 weeks exploring health related topics to include but not limited to Drug Abuse/Violence, Decision Making, Media Influences, Coping with Anger and Anxiety, Communication and Social Skills, Assertiveness, Peer Pressure, and Sex/Reproductive Education.

Food Topics

One semester elective covering a variety of food based topics. Basic food safety and sanitation are covered preparing students for working in the labs. Students will spend one week learning and preparing foods in each of the following topics; Fruits and Vegetables, Protein Foods, Milk Products, and Grain Products. A special unit will focus on baking, and desserts. Students will also explore nutritional needs in the diet, different foods/customs/traditions around the world, and making good consumer choices.

Family Development

One semester elective focuses on personal, family, and social growth. This class will lay a foundation for students to understand their role in society and within the family.

Sewing Construction I

One semester elective allowing students to learn basic sewing equipment, tools, and clothing care. This course will involve sewing projects to include a basic pillow, decorative pillow, and quilted wall hang. This class requires a $5 lab fee.

Sewing Constructions II

Sewing Construction I and permission by the teacher are required. Students will explore for one semester, Clothing and Society, The Fashion World, Color and Design, Fibers, and Fabrics. Sewing lab will include the completion of a basic garment. This class requires a $5 lab fee.

Financial Literacy

One semester elective offered to Juniors and Seniors preparing them for life after high school. This class helps students better understand their finances and credit. Also, to help prepare them for job searches, taxes, renting an apartment, loans & financing, and purchasing a car.

Health & Fitness

One semester, freshmen required elective. Freshmen are required to take this course to provide them with basic health and fitness education. The theme of this course is “Fitness For Life.” It will involve classroom labs and fitness labs. Be prepared to get up and move. Topics to include; Body Systems, Goal Setting, Healthy Behaviors, and Design of a Personal Fitness Program.
