¡Buenos días! I have been teaching at Proctor High School since fall 2004, having spent twenty-five years teaching French and Spanish in several area public and private schools. I am a graduate of Middlebury College and Tufts University, with B.A. and M.A. degrees in French, and I have a dual Vermont state certification in French and Spanish. In February 2006, I had the pleasure of accompanying thirty-two Otter Valley and Proctor students on an eleven-day trip to Costa Rica.

SPANISH COURSES

SPANISH I (1 credit)

The Spanish I program will focus on the development of proficiency in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students should plan on participating actively in class from the first day. Class materials include textbooks, workbooks, and audio- and video materials to help develop these skills. Students will explore the Hispanic world and gain information about how Spanish-speaking people live in the United States and abroad. As Spanish I is a high-school level class, students should expect to spend daily preparation time outside of class.

SPANISH II (1 credit)

In the second level of study students will continue to develop their mastery of the grammar and vocabulary building begun in the first year. Students will be able to discuss current topics of interest, seek and give directions, and express wishes and preferences, using past, present and future tenses. Cultural studies will include a variety of Hispanic countries as well as youth-related themes such as sports, travel, music and leisure activities. Much class work will be actively conducted in Spanish. It is recommended that students earn a grade of 70 or better in order to continue in Spanish II.

SPANISH III (1 credit)

At this level, students will be working on mastery of all the basic grammar concepts, including a variety of past and other tenses. Much emphasis will be placed on oral comprehension and practice, with most class work conducted in Spanish. Students should be prepared to develop their writing skills, through weekly essays or other forms of written expression. CD's and films will also be used extensively to further development of oral and written vocabulary. Cultural topics, as appropriate, will be included in class and independent work. A prerequisite for this course is a 70 or better in Spanish II.

SPANISH IV (1 credit)

Students should be prepared to work responsibly and independently in order to continue to develop mastery of vocabulary and grammar skills. Students should expect to speak Spanish on a daily basis in class. Literature will be introduced, and other forms of communication, such as newspaper and magazine articles and forms, will be a regular part of class work. Individual topics of reading and discussion will be selected partly according to interests of individual class members. A prerequisite for this course is a 75 or better in Spanish III.

Student Work

At one point in the winter, when I had missed several days of school due to illness, students wrote me letters in Spanish. One Spanish II student had the following things to tell me:

(una estudiante) (GET WELL SOON)
