How to Animate...
  • The Animators Workbook by Tony White:  (Book)  Everything you need to know about the fundamentals of animation.  A good balance of content and a beautiful book to look at.  Contains the principals and industry insight you need to succeed in making a quality piece of animation.
  • Clay Animation 'How To' Web Page by Mark Spess.  Explores various aspects of claymation from creating armatures to building sets.  Book, tools and more available to purchase.
  • Animation as a Hobby by Bob Godfry:  (Book)  OOP  A good book for beginners. Explores cutout animation and cell animation.
  • Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell:  (Book)  Excellent resource  for story tellers (which is what animation is all about).
  • Animation From Script To Screen by Shamus Culhane: (Book)   A good "how-to" book by a veteran of Disney, Fleischer, Lantz and TV commercials.   It's not only about animation and animating, but about the creative process involved.
  • Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston:   (Book)  OOP and expensive, but arguably the best book on drawn animation ever published.  Thomas and Johnston worked as animators on all the major Disney features through The Fox and the Hound. 
  • Timing For Animation by Harold Whitaker and John Halas:  (Book)  OOP  A good book for understanding the mechanics of timing and drawing.
  • The Art of Dramatic Story Telling by Lajos Egri:  (Book)  An excellent resource for telling a structured and thoughtful story, be it drama, novel, screenplay or animated short.
